The Rez Sisters Tomson Highway
Publisher: Fifth House Publishers

I am reviewing the book, The Rez Sisters, written by Tomson Highway. That was when Highway burst into the mainstream with The Rez Sisters and Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing, plays that won audiences, acclaim, and, amazing for anyone coming from the fringe, commercial success. Posted 28th July 2010 by Starleigh Grass. Interestingly enough, this blurb was originally used in The Rez Sisters, and he's expanded it slightly over the course of twenty years. My connection to this work was its performance at the Globe Theatre at the insistence of Ken Kramer, despite Board objection. In The Rez Sisters, Highway's play about seven native women who hope to attend the biggest bingo in the world, the character Zhaboonigan describes an awful rape to the Trickster Nanabush, who appears in the form of a seagull. I suppose being a young native woman, I was drawn to them… My first experience with Native Earth was seeing Tomson Highway's The Rez Sisters, and I remember very clearly how it galvanized me. It's a love-hate sisterhood for the Rez women, but the story of their struggles remains as captivating as ever in this powerful new production. The Rez Sisters (1986) Tomson Highway Another community, another voice. This book focuses on the lives of seven sisters on an Indian reservation.
